France continued to take the lead, and TEXTUAL SCHOLARSHIP AND BOOK HISTORY 49 was the first country to plan and publish a multi-volume book history (Histoire de l’édition française). However, in the last fifteen years the subject has begun to spread, and there are now major academic projects in a number of countries: in Great Britain a seven-volume Cambridge History of the Book in Britain, which is being published by Cambridge University Press (see Greetham, p. 338), and a four-volume History of the Book in the USA is in preparation (also to be published by Cambridge University Press); in Australia a History of the Book in Australia is being planned; and in Germany there are discussions on the proposal to publish a history of the book in Germany from 1870.
