Project Factors The Curriculum Project is a branch of Thabyay Education Network, which works to build the capacity of individuals within marginalized groups from all Myanmar’s nationalities. Through the provision of integrated higher education services, Thabyay aims to equip these individuals with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, qualifications, and networks necessary to work effectively for social justice, human development, and reconciliation in Burma (Thabyay Education Network, 2009). Due to these goals, and those of funders and other key external stakeholders, the focus selected was English for community development, ethnic reconciliation, and positive social change in Burma.

It is a project that appears to be seeking change in at least two areas – in people’s lives, through giving people the language skills to access further educational and employment opportunities, and in Burma itself, through developing critical thinking skills. Most people would judge it an ambitious undertaking, not just because of the project’s aims, but because of the challenges that the curriculum designers face in gathering information about the teaching– learning environment and the learners’ needs.
