But can planets form around double or triple star systems? And if they can, would the orbits they achieve be stable? One problem is that the system's orbital eccentricity may disturb planetary orbits. Orbits are rarely perfect circles, but usually ellipses that are more or less elongated. In astronomical terms, a perfectly circular orbit has an orbital eccentricity of o, while an extremely elongated orbit is close to a value of 1. Because Centauri A and B display an orbital eccentricity of o. 52 around their common center of mass, their separation changes during their 8o-year orbit around it, ranging from 11 to 35 AU.
