The yankee average approach of dimension is a different and atypical factor to behold with its esoteric, inconsistent criteria: twelve inches in a foot, 3 toes in a backyard, 16 oz. in a pound, 100 pennies to the greenback. For whatever as elemental as counting and estimating the area round us, it kind of feels like a complicated instrument to take advantage of.

There is no justification whatsoever for jumping from this obvious fact to the conclusion that fuzzy logic collapses to two-valued logic. Turning to his analysis of fuzzy logic applications, Elkan’s conclusion reflects a misunderstanding of what fuzzy logic is, and a faulty analysis of the reasons for its success. First, it must be clarified that the term “fuzzy logic” is used in two different senses. In its narrow sense, fuzzy logic is a logical system that is an extension of multivalued logic and serves as a foundation for If p is logically equivalent to q then p is approximate reasoning.

Recently my colleagues and I introduced a new class of fuzzy connectives, called uninorms? that provide the exact type of aggregation postulated as being required by Elkan. Consider the situation that for some object m we have t(redinside(m))= a, and t(greenoutside(m))= b. Our problem is to provide an aggregation operator Ito implement the connection between these values. Formally, letting d = t(waterme/on(m))we require some aggregation R such that d = R(a, b). The question is, what form should R take to capture the type of reinforcement desired by Elkan?

Ruspini is a senior computer scientist with the Artificial Intelligence Center of SRI International. He received his doctoral degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and has extensive research experience in the areas of approximate and commonsense reasoning, the calculus of evidence, knowledge-based systems, knowledge acquisition, inductive reasoning, and the representation and manipulation of uncertainty. He was an early contributor to the development of fuzzy-set theory and its applications, and pioneered its introduction to automatic classification and pattern recognition in 1969.
