Even with all the adverse publicity about smoking, tobacco is still a major crop in several states, and it accounts for about one-third of farm employment in Suwannee County. Other major agricultural enterprises in the Live Oak environs include poultry production, dairy farms, and watermelon growing. More than 650,000 chickens are processed every week in the Gold Kist poultry plant that I passed between the park and Live Oak. That's more than one million drumsticks! S. 90, I stopped for lunch in Live Oak, a prosperous farm community with few tourist attractions or amenities, and discovered the Dixie Grill on the corner of Howard Street and Dowling Avenue.
Authentic Confederate and Union encampments are set up, and realistic war action allows visitors to get a feel for how Civil War battles were fought. Farther along FL 363 dense forests stood high along both sides of the highway. About 13 miles south of Tallahassee, I came to the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, a large wilderness park surrounding one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world. Throughout Florida's panhandle and central sections, hundreds of such springs flow out of the vast underground caverns that riddle limestone formations beneath the surface.
There are historical markers along the highway that explain the trek de Soto made with 600 soldiers and assorted livestock along old Native American trails in 1539. S. 90 passes through country that's among the wealthiest farming regions of the Panhandle, and certainly more prosperous than most rural farming areas in the state. The Suwannee River, long an important river in Florida and southern Georgia, runs along the eastern edge of this region. The area was one of the earliest and most prosperous cotton-growing regions in Florida, and its citizens were among the most outspoken proponents of secession prior to the Civil War.
