In the autumn of 1914 he undertook three trips to neutral countries to test ‘western opinion’8 on the issue. He did not return from his last trip to Switzerland, largely because he was tipped off that his arrest on return to Prague was imminent. Instead he went to Rome, and from there to a belligerent Paris and London. In Paris he was joined during the course of 1915 by Edvard Bene˘s, a young professor of sociology at the time and a student of Masaryk, and by Josef Dürich, a member of the Russophile wing of the Czech Maffie.

The disastrous defeat of the empire at the hands of Prussia had led to a compromise with the 18 Czech–German Relations and the Politics of Central Europe Magyar gentry resulting in the establishment of an Austro-Hungarian ‘dual monarchy’. The emperor remained common ruler as emperor in Austria and as king in Hungary. In 1889 the nationality problem came to the official foundation of Austrian Social Democratic Party. Initially this party united all ethnic groups of the Austrian parts of the dual monarchy. Under its German leadership little attention was given to nationality issues for the first years.
