We were shown pictures of baguettes and ficelles, so very different from our own dreary pan loaves and turn-overs. Joan of Arc and Niall of the Nine Hostages were rescued from the dust that had years ago settled on them. Mathematical subjects were less distasteful than they had been. Even geography had its moments, though admittedly not many. Patiently, without anger, errors and aberrations were corrected, a Relief nib forever dipping into the bottle of Stephens' red ink Miss Quirke uncorked every morning when she sat down.
She instigated little in her life: experience was what happened to her. Our dog Dano once followed Kitty to Mass, barking at her in the church when she tried to ignore him. She afterwards retailed the episode in detail, stuttering through her laughter, her huge teeth stormier than ever. T h e commotion there was, ma'am! ' She courted such embarrassment. At Duffy's Circus one of the clowns sat in her lap while everyone applauded. A man w h o came to paint the hall tried to kiss her, putting his arms around her under a ladder.
While you walk its length, there is something comforting in that. ' Kitty wasn't young any more, or seemed not to be, and she'd never been pretty. She had eyes that were always blinking and teeth my brother called 'stormy' — a mouthful of enormous white crags, constantly bared in laughter or anger. When I was eight and my brother six we particularly enjoyed lighting fires and would indulge this inclination on the kitchen floor when Kitty was left in charge of us. While she was changing into her afternoon black we would carefully arrange newspaper and kindling before putting a match to them, and she'd return to the kitchen to find it full of smoke and flames.
