Everyone was able to listen. Next day the Atherton newspaper reported that, for the first time, a broadcast from California had been heard in Kairi. Some years later, when they eventually passed through Townsville, he was using one of the earliest radio telephones to be heard there. We picked him up as he neared Cairns and listened to him till he reached Cooktown.
The workers were going about their business doing other jobs around the mill. Toop was putting through the first flitch - an outside, lengthways, slice of the log to be cut into planks.
