Its clinical efficacy appears to be quite similar to that of bupivacaine but it has a greater margin of safety. Ropivacaine is less cardiotoxic than bupivacaine. Fentanyl is available in a combination product along with the butyrophenone tranquilliser fluanisone, and is marketed as 'Hypnorm'.
